Teutonic Castle in Malbork

Malbork

46 km

The Malbork Castle Museum is the host of the largest Gothic castle complex in the world. Malbork Castle - an object from the UNESCO World Heritage List - is a masterpiece of defensive and residential architecture of the late Middle Ages, a material text dealing with the phenomenon of the Teutonic state in Prussia, as well as a laboratory of ideas and conservation practices implemented here from the first half of the 19th century until today.

The castle on the Nogat river was built in stages from the second half of the 13th century. Initially, he served as one of the commander's castles. In 1309 it became the seat of the great masters of the order. As the capital of the State of the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the German House in Jerusalem, it became the main center of diplomacy, a military, economic and religious center. Until the first half of the 15th century, Malbork was known all over the continent as one of the main bases of crusades to Lithuania and Żmudź and a place of spectacular games, feasts and tournaments attracting knights from many European countries to Prussia.

In 1410 - after the defeat of the Teutonic army near Grunwald - Malbork, not captured by the Polish-Lithuanian army, saved the further existence of the order. The deepening political and economic crisis of the religious state led to the revolt of the subjects (1454) and the incorporation of the country into the Polish Crown. In 1457, bought out of mercenary Teutonic hands, Malbork Castle passed into the hands of King Kazimierz Jagiellończyk. From then on, for over three centuries, the stronghold served as the temporary residence of the Polish rulers, the military base in Royal Prussia, and the seat of starosts and economists who had administrative, military, police and judicial power.

As a result of the first partition (1772), the northern lands of the Poland
and with them the fortress on the Nogat belonging to Prussian King Frederick II. In the Prussian period, the castle served as barracks and warehouses. Severely devastated, it regained its Gothic shape as a result of reconstruction work carried out at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century by the outstanding architect Konrad Steinbrecht.

In 1945 Poles became the hosts of Malbork again. Terribly destroyed in the last phase of World War II, the castle was lifted from ruins over time. In 1994, the President of the Republic of Poland recognized the Malbork Castle as a Historical Monument, and in 1997 the building was inscribed on the extremely highly UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Castle Museum in Malbork was established in 1961. It has two branches in its structure: the castle of the Pomezanian chapter in Kwidzyn (Monument of History) and the former mayor's castle in Sztum. His basic task was caring for the historic substance of three castles, conducting research and conservation works, educational activities as well as collecting, storing and sharing historical collections. The facility has collections in the field of art, handicraft, architecture and history. The most interesting of them include the collections of amber, militaria, numismatic items, architectural detail and sculpture.

The largest conservation projects carried out under the aegis of the museum include works carried out in the Great Refectory Complex at the Middle Castle and the reconstruction of the Church of St. Mary at the High Castle. These activities are a sign of the high standards of conservation care used in the Castle Museum in Malbork.

In addition to its core activity, the museum is involved in the organization of scientific symposia, artistic and educational projects, and even historical outdoor performances such as the "Siege of Malbork". The Nogat Castle also quite often becomes a film and television set. In the summer months, in the evenings, a light and sound performance is presented within its walls.
